Is it Spring Yet?! A Fisherman's Lament (and a Few Ways to Cope)

Okay, fellow anglers, I'm gonna say it: I'M OVER WINTER. 🥶
Seriously, how much longer do we have to endure this frozen tundra before we can get back out on the water? My fishing rod is gathering dust, my tackle box is weeping softly in the corner, and I'm pretty sure I saw my boat trying to escape the garage and head south for the winter.
Anyone else feeling the itch? 🙋♂️🙋♀️
I know, I know, patience is a virtue...blah blah blah. But when all you can think about is the feel of the sun on your face, the tug of a line, and the sweet, sweet victory of reeling in a big one, it's tough to stay zen.
So, what's a stir-crazy fisherman (or woman) to do? Here are a few of my tried-and-true coping mechanisms:
- 1. Obsessively check the weather: Okay, I know this doesn't actually make spring come any faster, but a little dose of false hope never hurt anyone, right? (Don't judge me.)
- 2. Organize my tackle box: This is actually productive...and it gives me an excuse to fondle all my lures and dream about the fish they'll soon be enticing.
- 3. Watch fishing videos on repeat: YouTube is my best friend this time of year. Nothing like watching someone else land a monster bass to fuel the fire. (And make me even more impatient.)
- 4. Plan my first fishing trip: I've already got my calendar marked, my maps plotted, and my bait strategy all figured out. Now all I need is for Mother Nature to cooperate!
- 5. Daydream: This is my personal favorite. I close my eyes and imagine myself out on the lake, the sun shining, the birds singing, and the fish practically jumping into my boat. (Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?)
How are you all holding up? Share your winter fishing woes (and coping strategies) in the comments below! Let's commiserate together. And remember, spring is coming...eventually! 🎣
